The Only Mythical Creature

Among all twelve zodiac animals, the Dragon holds a unique distinction โ€” it is the only mythical creature in the Chinese Zodiac. While the Rat, Ox, Tiger, and others are real animals, the Dragon exists in the realm of legend, representing the divine power of nature itself.

When the Jade Emperor announced the Great Race, everyone expected the Dragon to win easily. After all, the Dragon could fly through the sky, command the winds, and control the rain. No river, mountain, or obstacle could possibly challenge such a magnificent being.

The Dragon’s Detour

The Dragon did indeed take to the skies with a burst of celestial power, soaring high above all the other competitors. From above, the Dragon could see the entire race course stretching out below. Victory was virtually guaranteed.

But then the Dragon noticed something. Far below, a small village was suffering from a terrible drought. The crops were withering, the wells were dry, and the people were desperate. The Dragon’s heart was moved with compassion.

“These people need rain,” the Dragon thought. “I have the power to help them. The race can wait.”

The Dragon descended from its flight path and summoned great rain clouds. With powerful breaths and sweeping movements, the Dragon brought life-giving rain to the parched village. The people cheered and wept with gratitude as water filled their fields and streams.

Another Act of Kindness

Resuming the race, the Dragon flew onward but spotted another creature in trouble. The Rabbit was clinging desperately to a floating log in the middle of the river. The Dragon sent a gentle puff of wind that pushed the log toward the far bank, helping the Rabbit reach safety.

These acts of generosity cost the Dragon precious time. By the time the Dragon finally crossed the finish line, four animals had already arrived. The Dragon earned fifth place.

The Jade Emperor’s Question

The Jade Emperor was puzzled. “Mighty Dragon, with your powers you could have easily won. Why did you finish fifth?”

The Dragon replied simply: “I saw people who needed rain, and a small creature who needed help. I could not fly past them without acting.”

The Jade Emperor smiled. “And that is exactly why the Dragon is the most honored sign in the zodiac.”

The Dragon in Chinese Culture

The Dragon is the supreme symbol of Chinese culture. Unlike Western dragons that are often depicted as fearsome villains, the Chinese Dragon (้พ™/Lรณng) is a benevolent, wise, and powerful being associated with the Emperor, authority, prosperity, and good fortune.

Historically, the Dragon was the symbol of the Chinese Emperor, and only the Emperor could use the five-clawed dragon motif. Dragon dances, dragon boats, and dragon imagery remain central to Chinese festivals and celebrations worldwide.

The Year of the Dragon is considered the most auspicious for births, and birth rates in Chinese communities traditionally rise during Dragon years.
