The Last but Not Least

The Pig โ€” the twelfth and final animal of the Chinese Zodiac โ€” holds a special place as the sign that completes the cycle. The Pig’s story in the Great Race is perhaps the most endearing and human of all the zodiac tales.

When the Jade Emperor announced the Great Race, the Pig was interested but not particularly rushed. The Pig enjoyed the good things in life: delicious food, comfortable rest, and pleasant company. Racing was not naturally high on the Pig’s list of favorite activities.

A Feast Along the Way

The Pig started the race with the other animals, trotting along at a reasonable pace. But before long, the Pig’s legendary appetite intervened. Along the race route, the Pig discovered a magnificent spread of food โ€” wild fruits, vegetables, and other delights.

“Surely,” the Pig thought, “there’s time for a quick meal. I can’t race on an empty stomach.”

The quick meal turned into a full feast. The Pig ate heartily, savoring every bite. After finishing the meal, the Pig felt wonderfully full and content โ€” so content, in fact, that a nap seemed like the natural next step.

The Comfortable Nap

The Pig found a cozy spot in the warm sunshine and settled down for what was supposed to be a brief rest. The combination of a full belly, warm sun, and comfortable ground proved irresistible. The brief rest turned into a deep, satisfying sleep.

While the Pig slumbered peacefully, animal after animal crossed the finish line. The Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, and Dog all finished the race while the Pig snoozed contentedly.

The Last to Arrive

Eventually, the Pig woke up, stretched, and remembered the race. With a startled “Oh my!”, the Pig scrambled up and trotted toward the finish line as fast as its legs could carry it.

The Pig arrived just in time to claim the twelfth and final spot in the zodiac. The Jade Emperor had been about to close the race, but the Pig’s arrival at the last possible moment secured its place in the cycle forever.

“Better late than never,” the Pig said cheerfully, not particularly bothered by the last-place finish. After all, the Pig had enjoyed a wonderful meal and a perfect nap โ€” and still made it in time. Was that not a victory in its own way?

Trait How It Appears in the Story
Good Nature The Pig bore no ill will and remained cheerful despite finishing last
Love of Comfort The Pig prioritized eating and sleeping over competitive racing
Honesty The Pig was completely authentic โ€” it did not pretend to be something it wasn’t
Contentment The Pig was genuinely happy with its experience, regardless of ranking
Luck Despite everything, the Pig still managed to arrive just in time

The Pig in Chinese Culture

Despite finishing last in the race, the Pig is considered one of the most fortunate signs in the Chinese Zodiac. The Pig symbolizes wealth, abundance, and good fortune. In Chinese culture, a round, plump pig is a sign of prosperity โ€” indicating that the household has enough food and resources to thrive.

Piggy banks originated from this association between pigs and wealth. During Chinese New Year, pig imagery represents wishes for abundance in the coming year. The character for “home” (ๅฎถ) contains the radical for pig (่ฑ•) beneath a roof, suggesting that a pig under one’s roof represents a complete and prosperous household.

The famous literary character Zhu Bajie (็Œชๅ…ซๆˆ’) from “Journey to the West” โ€” a pig spirit who joins the pilgrimage โ€” embodies many Pig zodiac traits: he is lovable, honest, sometimes lazy, but ultimately good-hearted and devoted to his companions.
